Month Catch-Up

After our first week as new parents life has gradually become more stable and we have started to really enjoy parenting.

Rob's parents came out the second week after Asher was born to help for two weeks and boy did they! Delicious meals were prepared, bathrooms cleaned, floors vacummed, baby held and watched and the freezer and cupboards were stocked with easily prepared or warmed-up dinners. They insisted that I sleep so my life for two weeks consisted of caring for Asher, sleeping, and studying for a makeup mid-term (which I did quite well on). My mother-in-law even found time to sew Asher the monkey Halloween costume I had started for him. Thank you Mom and Dad!

One of many small miracles we have experienced occured while they were here. I needed to take Asher to the lactation consultant to have him weighed and decided last-minute to invite my mother-in-law to come with me. I was feeling fine on the way there but on the way back started to feel very dizzy, so much so that I had to pull over and my mother-in-law took over driving. I am grateful for the prompting to invite her to come along.

A Happy Monkey (dosen't he look adorable!)

My mother arrived the same day my in-laws left and has helped me transition to my new "normal" life. We headed out of the house almost every day and my mom organized and straightened the house so that the piles that drive me nuts (after awhile) were almost completely dispelled. Now I just have to upkeep it. While she was here I also enjoyed delicious traditional dinners from my family and produce from her amazing garden she brought with her. I also enjoyed hearing her journal entries from around the time myself and later my sister Chelsea were born. What sacrifices my parents went through! Thank you Mom!

Rob headed back to work the day after his parents arrived and loves coming home to see and play with his little boy. Too bad I haven't been able to take a picture of Rob dancing around the room with Asher... yet. Rob watches Asher at school for me (and tries to study for the GMAT exam) so that I can feed him either right before or after class. Poor guy, that's when the worst things have happened. One night, halfway to school, we realized that we hadn't put a pacifier or bottle in the diaper bag. Let's just say that Rob's fingers were well sucked for about 40 minutes. Another night Asher projectile-vomited milk all over Rob. The next class-night Rob experienced one of the worst blow-outs Asher has had. I'll be glad when this class is over and Rob is no longer abused :). After all this Rob still loves his R.E.M. (Ravenous Eating Machine).

As mentioned in the previous post, Asher rapidly put on weight going from 6 pounds 10 ounces in one week to 8 pounds 3 pounds, to 9 pounds 5 ounces in two weeks. That's an increase of almost 50% of his lowest body weight!

On November 3rd Asher awarded me his first grin and has continued to do so from time to time. It's amazing how one smile can make all the hassles of parenthood worth it. All the coos and cute baby noises sure don't hurt either. I love being a mother.

Crystal! I'm so sorry that first week was so hard. I wish I had your number so I could have called to check on you guys. So glad you were able to somewhat quickly figure out what the problem was and fix it. You'll get the hang of things. And don't be hard on yourself if you don't keep up with things like you want to. Our house is still a mess about 90% of the time, and dinner is picked up by Jud on his way home from work way more than it should be...but...that's life :)
I want to see you guys!! We should work something out soon, before baby #2 arrives.

He sure is a cutie. I'm really surprised they didn't help you more with getting feeding going in the hospital. I'm so glad the lactation consultant helped. I'm so glad it has gotten better too. I think newborn stage is the hardest. I wish we could come see you guys!
